Don has been involved at a senior level in a number of major transformations of business processes, especially those concerned with delivering legal services to the Commonwealth.
He has been closely involved at a senior level in a number of whole-of-government initiatives relating to the delivery of legal services to Commonwealth agencies.
He is able to contribute to the resolution of issues in organisational transformation through his strong background in public sector governance and employment law principles.
Experience
Don Markus is an experienced lawyer with a highly developed understanding of public administration processes, governance and accountabilities.
He has been a trusted adviser to the most senior levels in public administration.
Don for many years was General Counsel to the Commonwealth department with responsibilities for communications and the arts.
There he played a major role in addressing legal and regulatory issues arising out of projects of national significance such as the sale of Telstra and the establishment of the National Broadband Network.
Over this period Don also played a major role in providing leadership and guidance for in-house counsel in Commonwealth agencies, as an office holder in the Australian Corporate Lawyers’ Association and in interactions with relevant Commonwealth agencies.
Don has extensive experience in providing authoritative advice on significant public law issues from his time with the Office of General Counsel and the ACT Government Solicitor.
He has wide experience in legislative development, both in ACT and Commonwealth jurisdictions. This has been the focus of much of his recent work since commencing with Proximity.
Don retired from full time employment in 2012 and moved to a rural area in the Noosa Hinterland, where he undertook consultancies on a casual basis.
He has now relocated to his new principal residence back in Canberra, with occasional visits to his apartment in inner city Brisbane.
