Tell us how you came to join the Proximity team.

After 20 years in the public service, I was at a crossroads in my career and looking to explore my creative side. I wanted to join a consulting firm with values that aligned with mine, where I could work with interesting people on challenging projects. Proximity was recommended to me, and it turned out to be the perfect fit.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My mum always said, “Never say never,” and “A little bit of information used wisely goes a long, long way.” I try to keep those in mind, and also, “Never spit at the sky because it will fall back on you.” (I’m willing to try anything once.)

What is the best thing about working in the national capital?

Apart from the 17-minute commute in peak hour, I appreciate the openness and breathing space that Canberra offers. It brings a sense of clarity and peace. Living in the center of this fabulous democracy provides the opportunity to be right in the thick of things, with always something happening.

As a manager of people, what is your biggest challenge?

My team is highly capable, and my biggest challenge is balancing their workload and pacing ourselves to maintain high standards and achieve the best outcomes for our clients. I aim to use our talents wisely while avoiding overburdening the team.

What advice do you give to someone starting out in a career?

Don’t stay still; always move forward and continue to grow. If you see something challenging or more interesting, go in that direction.

What keeps you awake at night?

Making sure we have enough work in the pipeline for the team and striking the right balance. Also, juggling multiple responsibilities and the temptation to stream and binge-watch excellent television shows!

With an eye to the future, what does success look like for you?

Success is making a positive impact on our community with the help of talented and energetic people. At Proximity, we strive to make a difference in both big and small ways. Doing meaningful work and achieving outcomes is essential to me.

Away from work, what is your passion?

I love spending a day in the garden, putting on my headphones, boots, and gloves and helping things grow. Swimming is currently a favourite activity, and I enjoy travelling to exotic locations with my daughters, seeing the world through their eyes.
